The Weir, By Conor Mcpherson

I've never gone to see a play before and i was quite excited when a friend of mine suggested we try it as something new to do on a Saturday night out in Dublin. The location was obviously the Gate theatre, which was very impressive but was quite disappointed with the play however. It was very depressing to see the old Irish cliches and stereotypes trotted out yet again. 'Bowsies' in the bar telling yarns about ghosts and talking about the price of land and who got married to who etc. There was nothing in this which the likes of John B Keane hasn't already done to death. It was embarrassing to be honest. I thought the theatre was supposed to be thought provoking and insightful! I was waiting for the leprechauns to come onstage singing 'when Oirish eyes are smiling'. Could it be that I'm from Dublin and couldn't relate to any of this?

The Glass Menagerie

My friends and I were very disappointed with this performance. I note with amusement that the reviews I've read in the press have skilfully avoided expressing any opinion about this production in order to spare the embarressment of those involved. It's a shame that no one seems willing to print what will be painfully obvious to anyone who has to sit through this: the production is abysmal. I feel so strongly about this that I've decided to come online to warn others away. I get the impression that there was no director, because how could any director fail to notice the disastrous lack of chemistry between the cast members? They're supposed to be a family, but you'd never guess it from the way the actors perform - they appear to have met each other just before they stepped onto the stage. No ensemble performance here - everyone's doing their own thing in isolation.

The individual performances are variable. Francesca Annis puts everything into it but comes across as unconvincing - I found it hard to accept her character. Garrett Lombard does a competent job as her son, but can't get over the lack of chemistry. The one performance that strikes the right note comes from Marty Rea, who seems to have really done his research - he has all the mannerisms and intonations of those old 1940s American screwball comedies.

However, he only arrives on stage towards the end. By then the battle has been lost. And this is largely due to the very amateurish performance of Katie Kirby as Laura, the daughter. Is this the best that the Gate theatre can come up with? There are surely hundreds of talented actors who could have played this part. I'm not deliberately picking on her - it's just that if you don't buy her character, the whole play becomes completely pointless. I'm disgusted that this production was allowed to go on stage. I don't consider this to be a professional production. We have a right to expect higher standards from the Gate.
