Spiritualized

Jason Pierce returned to Dublin with an all electrical outfit including the marvellous John Coxon and what a mindblowing gig it was! You wouldnt expect anything else from the Spaceman? The set included impressive material from the current album nicely blended with classic materiel like 'think I'm in love', 'shine a light', and finishing with the graceful 'lord can you hear me'. Plus thrown in here and there was 10 minutes of drenching feedback cullminating with damn near blinding laser lighting to leave you stunned with your jaws on the floor, which is a huge relief after the recent years of fiddling to mixed results of acoustic mumbo jumbo. At least the spirit of Spacemen 3 is alive and well.

The set progressed in typical mechanical fashion with the shades of a somewhat skinnier Spaceman dictating with the audience interaction non existant bar a gentle thank you at the very end but lets just let music do the talking type attitude, and so it did. The sound at the tripod was perfect with the band trimmed back to a five piece plus 2 gospel singers haunting the sounds and the new young recruits in the band peering nervously over to Captain Spaceman almost pleading "it's just a tiny mistake, please dont fire me!".

So there you have it, at twenty two euro fifty, it was good value at a great venue with the punters being ushered out afterwards to make way for erm, a college disco. The legend of Spacemen lives on.

Gary Numan

We were in a pub in Sligo last night (Saturday the 8th March). Jam packed. In the pub was a two year old girl sat in a high chair watching a dvd on a lap top. Three security 'guards' were outside with their presidential ear pieces looking all hard and important. On Tuesday night Myself, my partner and our friends 6ft 2 son aged 15 queued up to go in and see Gary Numan at the Tripod in Dublin. Now this lad is an absolutely MASSIVE fan of Gary, hero worships him. Three security 'guards' would'nt let him in because he was'nt old enough. All we wanted to do was go to a GIG!!! DO THEY CLOSE THE BAR AT THE POINT BECAUSE DISNEY ON ICE IS SHOWING? think there's something wrong with this picture don't you?? I'm absolutely sure that the gig inside was amazing. I should know, I have followed Gary Numan since 1978, collected everything, been to loads of his gig over the years gigs including one of his air shows!

By the way, our friend's 6ft 2 son that had his dream trodden on, went in with his family and saw IRON MAIDEN at the point when he was TEN!

Another example of the Nanny state Ireland has become. What a shame.

Lee 'scratch' Perry & Band

I was a bit nervous about going to see the living legend Lee "Scratch" Perry. Would he have failed due to a long life of...well, LIFE!? Would he be still able to cut the grass? Would he get the joint going? Why did I worry? From the moment he pulled his wheelie suitcase out onto the stage, until he danced off with it, he proved that genius and talent know no age. Backed by a good tight band he gave one of the best and most entertaining performances I have seen in a long time. 5 star.
