Three Sisters

The set was much too overpowering, far too vast. All intimacy was lost on this epic scale as players had to hurtle across a vast space & pretend they were in a drawing-room. The men were utterly utterly boring - a big yawn every time one of them started speechifying. All this didactic stuff should have been cut - dreadful stuff. One sentence not 3 paragraphs would have been enough. Often the audience laughed at the wrong place because it was too melodramatic. All the men were either wimps or bores. Andrevy's last speech was fair but most of the time he didn't seem to know what play he was in.

Irina was too young, Masha was too old (cigarette-puffing just made her look like hooker & what was it with that ghastly black dress???) Olga was just right and single-handedly almost saved the show. Only she was convincing as a refined, resevered, aristocratic woman - splendid splendid performance. Her bedroom scene with the brassy Natasha was a triumph. A Great great actress! (easily 5 stars) Natasha was equally good & knocked spots of everyone else. The old servant woman was good but much too refined & much too nimble.

A few moments of pure magic but overall an intensely boring evening. So long so tedious..just like a Russian winter.

The Seafarer May 27th 2008

It had been nearly ten years since I saw a production at the Abbey Theatre and I was looking forward to something vaguely resembling Dr Faustus. The Seafarer is a mysterious title, and as the scenery(which remains the same throughout) was representing a household struggling with alcoholism in a run down part of Dublin, showed no signs of any character fit for the high seas, suggested that the title was metaphorical. But which of the characters, who all had their own demons to deal with was the Seafarer? The obvious thought was Sharkey, the main character, but as the play progresses, it becomes clear that there is only one character that will never be redeemed!

This play is a real gem. It has all the ingredients of entertainment - humour, empathy and pathos. The delivery of the characters is strong and coherent, except for the rather wooden role of the devil, but I believe a last minute replacement had to be found. Perhaps the last one had been redeemed! Prepare to have many laughs at the visual humour. This play is Father Ted written by Christopher Marlowe.

This was a very enjoyable night at the Abbey and I hope it is not another ten years before I visit again- but I do live in Carlisle, England.

Romeo And Juliet

Wow! I saw this modern production of Shakespeare's greatest love story last night and undoubtedly it is a play to remember. The acting was pretty good on the whole but the effects were awe-inspiring; the rain effect before the interval were especially amazing and really added to the dramatic element of the entire production. I would recommend anyone to see this version of Romeo and Juliet.

The Playboy Of The Western World

We saw it last night in a packed house. Not one empty seat. As I am married to a Nigerian I really enjoyed some of the remarks (Tribe & Compound!). We never laughed so much. Giles Terera as Christopher was amazing and all the cast truly deserved the standing ovation they received. Well done Bisi & Roddy - excellent - a great night out.

The Crucible

This was my first visit to a Dublin Theatre and the Crucible my first taste of Arthur Miller - neither disappointed me. Leaving it to the critics to debate the parallel between Miller's original intentions and modern events, I anticipated this as an evening of entertainment and that is what it was. It's rare to find such a cohesive cast and this one was impressive keeping the attention of the audience throughout, making the interval seem almost intrusive. The dark and drab set focused attention on the actors, every word was clear, every actor confident in their role. The outstanding role for me was Reverend Hale (Peter Gowen) who gave a moving performance, questioning the actions and motives of the villagers and finally the justice of the court. If you have the opportunity go and see it!

The Cavalcaders

A thoroughly enjoyable experience. I'm not always that keen on musicals but the numbers performed were superb and really underpinned the darker story being told about the histories of four main characters. All the performances were faultless and there were some fine touchs. I'd like to say more but that might spoil the show. I happily recommend this show to all.
