Andy MckeeSaying Andy McKee is a great guitarist is a bit like saying Michelangelo had a knack for painting ceilings. Having emerged as a youtube star and the envy of guitar fans everywhere, Andy seems to have grasped how massive his videos are and how he can capatilise on them by touring the globe. Rumour has it that he has 'God bless youtube' tattoed on his arm, rumours eh. To be honest with you I was a little wary of going to see a guy that 'only' plays the guitar and was thinking that if it got boring I could nip off as the crowd would not be that big. WRONG!!! For a start the crowd was big and salvating at the thought of the man on their laptop coming to life. I have never been a fan of The Village as a venue but for gigs like this it is spot on. Having waited a comfortable 40 mins I was ready to judge Andy McKee's guitar playing. I was truly setting myself up for a long hard look in the mirror. For Andy is not a guitarist, no, he is a 6 string hypnotist from an alien planet. I have seen alot of great guitar players but never have I seen anyone do what Andy can do. He quietly walked on to the stage without any fan fare and without a word he launched into the title track from his Art Of Motion album and within minutes the sound of jaws scraping off the floor was deafening. In between tunes he was chatty (but I would say he is a really boring friend to have) and amusing, and as the night wore on not only did he get funnier and more confident with the crowd but his playing got better and better and better and better.....you get the picture. When he finally round to playing brilliant Drifting track made famous by youtube, the crowd where smitten and when he busted out his cover of Toto's 'Africa' you could smell the awe. To be perfectly frank with you there is little I can say that can convey how amazed and fulfilled I walked away from the Village on thursday but I can tell you that Andy will be back in August and October and if there is true justice he will fill Vicar Street, at least. Andy, you blew me away and I will not forget it for a long time. |

Roisin MurphyI went to see the fun and intresting Roisin Murphy last night in the Village. She gave us a range of costumes, a black leather cowboy jacket, baloon dresses, Philip Tracy Hat......the two backing singers wore black and white, gold earings, touch of glamour, they had a boysterious cat fight with Roisin, it was great fucken fun, it was sort of new rave, slightly like a female Elton John..my friend commented that she was even a bit of a knacker, this was her bold, i couldnt give a shit charm.i tought it was one of the best gigs i have seen in a long time.......old 1950's style comic strips featured in the background..her band was made up on three other guy, wearing white jacket suits, i tought the black bouncers wearing black suits in the Village looked good amoungst it all.. fair play to you Roisin it was fucken feckin great.x |

Mos DefWe were disappointed with the delay! By the time the dude came on we had to bounce - the place was jointed and after 2 hours+ of listening to generic sounds and being crushed by the growing crowd - we had enough. Stayed long enough for the brother to tell us that he was no prima donna and the delay was blamed on "technical difficulties". Took a flight up from Cork + hotel+tickets - hmmm. not a cheap night. Still have love for Mos Def but yesterday he was Mos Late! |

Mos DefYes Mos Def showed up two and a half hours late, yes the crowd got no explanation as to why they where waiting, yes the crowd where booing come 10 o'clock, yes when they arrived they procceeded to rewire equipment on the stage and the DJ had to try and calm the crowd down. But given that the place was still jam packed when one of the most original MC's in history walked on stage and tore straight into 'Ghetto Rock' it showed that they wanted to see him rock the house and he duly obliged by raising his fist and shouting with and at the crowd 'black jack johnson NYC r-o-c-k-i-n-g, sun and the moon, earth stars and planets before its all done you goin all understand it' and he was off like a hip hop juggernaut. Playing for a solid hour and a half after he explained that the lateness was no 'prima donna shit' but that 'it's a long way from brooklyn to here' (something I think the crowd knew anyway but by the looks of it he had just gotten off the plane) Mos Def reminded everyone in the village why they had stayed so late by injecting his mass charisma and energy into the crowd who quickly fogave him his tardiness. As a performer he has a real connection with his crowd and as an MC he rolls it out like no other, even at one point calling for the deejay to 'reeewwwiiinnnd' given that they had jumped the beat. In between some tracks he let the deejay play some old blues and soul numbers to which he seemed to just drift into a trance, that could have been pretty boring only for him leading the crowd in an accapella sing song of Marvin Gaye's 'What's Goin On', something he seemed to love and when ever the chance arose the deejay cut the track and Mos encouraged everyone to sing along to whatever tracks they knew, which they did with gusto. All Mos Def fan's like myself felt in awe of the man but I am guessing that regular hip hop heads where probably still pissed over the wait. Hopefully next time he will one- be on time, two- bring a support act and three- bring Talib Kweli and give the crowd a real surprise with a Blackstar set. The venue share's half the blame for not arranging some sort entertainment at the start of the night, breakdancers, a DJ or a fucking juggler would have at least taken the crowds attention away from the ridiculus CD that played about 40 seconds of several hip hop tracks and then changed song. Mos, my friend, get a watch, or at least an earlier flight next time. I enjoyed it alot and I know many others did too. It was Mos Def for gods sake, or is that, it was God for Mos Def's Sake. One Love to the greatest BKMC The Mighty Mos Def. |

Mos DefI must say, very dissappointed with the night. Doors 7.30, i was there at 8....it was full by 8.30. Everyone waited with no word from organisers or music team for 2 full hours. I left at 10, the crowd was booing, bad buzz. I heard from a mate that they were honored with the presence at 10.45!!, over 3 hours after doors, no support and €30 a ticket. I really like mos def, but that gig was a farce....bad communications, the crowd were taken for granted and once again I felt like I was part of a herd of cattle in the dublin gig scene. Please. The village has succeeded in reminding me of what an uncaring, condescending bunch of money grabbing philistines run the place....end of rant. |

The Future Kings Of Spain@the Village 28th SeptThe Future Kings of Spain certainly haven’t had the easiest of rides in the music industry, this hasn’t dampened their passion for great song writing and heart thumping performances. After four years they have released their long awaited second album “Nervoussystem”. The band played their launch gig on the 28th Sept to a sold out crowd at the Village. The band are in peak form and the stage is host to an electrical storm of classic tracks such as Venetian Blinds and newer material, “Kick in the Teeth” and “This is the End”. After a uphill struggle with record company finances, there is a sense on stage the band have been thinking about nothing else but getting back into performing and getting their music heard. The new tracks are already well circulated on Irish radio thanks to alternative stations like Phantom FM whose listeners actually got to choose “Guess again” as the first released track from the album. The quality of this Irish band performance is unquestionable, their guitar riffs, energy, and song writing is up there with top performing artists such as Foo Fighters and Queens o the Stone Age. Each time I have seen this band play live, they give every inch and more to their performance. If you get a chance to see them play at any venue in the upcoming weeks, get your rocks off and go! This band need to be appreciated as the new champions of the Irish rock scene. |
