Saint Patrick's Festival 2009
Published 6th Feb 2009 by Amanda
The St Patrick's Festival in Dublin is the country's largest annual event, lasting for five days with activities including street theatre, fireworks, music, dance, comedy, film, a treasure hunt, visual art exhibitions, family fun and, of course, the St Patrick's Parade. From March 12th – 17th thousands of Irish people and visitors alike will paint the town green for five fantastic, fun-filled days. So whether you are Irish or just wish you were, Dublin is the place to be in March to enjoy Ireland's biggest party.
The main event, on 17 March, is the Festival Parade, which snakes its way down O'Connell Street and through the city centre for three hours. Expect Irish and international bands, street performers and pageants - if you want to watch from the shelter of a grandstand, you can book online at the festival website.
Other regular annual events include the Célí Mór (ceilidh) in Earlsfort Terrace, a city centre treasure hunt and the Big Day Out, a free family event in the heart of Dublin with clowns, street performers and madcap music. Also look out for art exhibitions and installations in surprising places around the city, from shop windows to shopping centres.
